The US took 205 years to owe $1 trillion - now it pays that much in interest every year

America’s national debt has reached roughly $35 trillion, but the transcript argues that the headline number is not even the most dangerous part of the problem. The United States took 205 years to accumulate its first $1 trillion of debt, yet by 2024 it was spending around $1 trillion every year just servicing interest, while debt stood at roughly 120% of GDP. The transcript attributes trillions in additional debt across the Bush, Obama, Trump and Biden administrations and warns that higher Federal Reserve rates are making the interest burden increasingly difficult to control. If investors ever lose confidence in U.S. Treasury bonds, the consequences could spread far beyond Washington - into borrowing costs, the dollar, financial markets and the global economy.

Mortgage renewals cost Canadians $375 more a month as 31% cut other spending

CMHC reported widespread payment increases for mortgage holders renewing during 2022–2024, underscoring pressure on household budgets. The CMHC mortgage renewal study cites average monthly increases of $375 and how Canada mortgage rates, the stress test, refinancing, and amortization shaped outcomes. Findings show hikes ($100–$250 for 36%, $251–$500 for 28%, $501–$1,000 for 12%, over $1,000 for 7%) and a 2.8% consumption drop from March 2022 to April 2024. Default concerns eased from 53% to 39%, while 37% worried, 38% struggled with debt payments, and 8% missed a payment. Over 90% renewed below the minimum qualifying rate, defined as the contract rate plus 2% or 5.25%. About 10% refinanced, with 70% extending amortization by six years. By mid-2027, the largest increases will have passed.
